Optimizing Biofoundry Technology: Spirit Scientific Explores New Applications in Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine has become a rapidly growing global industry due to its properties of promoting repair and delaying degeneration. The market size is estimated to rise from US$35.5 billion in 2024 to US$90 billion by 2030. Founded in 2015, Spirit Scientific Co., Ltd., led by Founder and Chairman Steven D Lin,MD , centers its core on “Biofoundry™” engineering.

By combining pharmaceutical-grade specifications to develop BMLT® , the company has extended from high-concentration platelet growth factor extraction to diverse material applications, driving the standardization and normalization of regenerative medicine.

Precision Preparation Services Expanding into International Markets

High-concentration platelet therapy has been developed for over half a century and is widely used in fields such as medical aesthetics, orthopedics, and sports medicine. However, traditional PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) must be used immediately after separation and cannot be stored for long periods, requiring patients to undergo blood draws before every treatment. Furthermore, the concentration of platelets and growth factors in PRP is affected by an individual’s health status and centrifugation parameters, leading to inconsistent efficacy—a major limitation in clinical application.

To address these challenges, Spirit Scientific used Biofoundry technology to establish a platelet powder manufacturing process. Adopting a pharmaceutical-grade “fixed-dose and fixed-quantity” model, the company first performs high-concentration platelet separation and purification, then uses vacuum lyophilized technology to remove moisture. This results in the finished PLT (Platelet Lyophilized Treatment), which can be stored for long periods. Key technologies ensure safety and preparation activity, while established service workflows lower the entry barrier for medical institutions and improve clinical efficiency.

Steven D Lin,MD stated that Taiwan’s medical quality is excellent, providing a deep foundation for developing regenerative medicine. Spirit Scientific will continue to focus on scientific innovation, deepening professional technology, and consolidating its presence in Taiwan while actively expanding into international markets, aiming to be a key force in the implementation and popularization of regenerative medicine.

Emphasis on Interdisciplinary thinking and Multi-talented Professionals

Spirit Scientific has been deeply involved in the field of regenerative medicine for many years. As technology matures and clinical applications expand, its organizational structure has become increasingly comprehensive. The company currently consists of core units such as Sales, R&D, Manufacturing, and International Business, covering functions like Marketing, QA/QC, Intellectual Property, Clinical Application, and Operations Management. This model provides both stability and flexibility. Lin pointed out that while each department has clear divisions of labor, cross-departmental collaboration remains the key driver for bringing R&D results to fruition, improving process efficiency, and enhancing clinical conversion energy. In recent years, the company has actively expanded overseas, focusing particularly on Japan, where the regulatory environment is mature; international cooperation has become a vital strategic direction for continued growth.

Lin mentioned that the company is in a period of high growth, expanding from three founders to over a hundred colleagues within a few years. Because the Taiwan base possesses complete factory facilities and manufacturing capacity, coupled with the needs of international market progression, there is ongoing recruitment across all departments. To meet the demands of international cooperation, Spirit Scientific has also planned talent cultivation programs, arranging for employees to go to Japan in stages to learn local regulations, process management, and market operation models. For job seekers aspiring to join the biotech industry but lacking overseas practical experience, this system provides rare international exposure and career growth opportunities.

Regarding talent requirements, the company does not see biotechnology background as the sole threshold. Instead, it places more value on a candidate’s learning motivation, proactivity, stress resistance, and interdisciplinary comprehension. Since regenerative medicine spans diverse fields—including biomaterials, clinical needs, regulatory processes, and commercial advancement—composite talents with interdisciplinary thinking are often more favored within the organization. Additionally, as digital management and AI tools are introduced into operational processes, those familiar with these technologies will possess a more significant competitive advantage in the future biotech industry.

Developing “To be task-ready from day one” and Thinking Skills to Strengthen Workplace Advantage

Steven D Lin,MD noted that the startup environment changes rapidly. During interviews, he often asks candidates if they have faced failure and how they responded, observing their problem-solving skills, the courage to admit deficiencies, and their attitude toward growing from setbacks. These interactions reveal a candidate’s stability, stress resistance, and attitude toward challenges. He emphasized that an interview is not just an evaluation but an exchange; therefore, he provides advice at the end, hoping candidates gain inspiration regardless of whether they are hired.

In terms of professional qualifications, while there is no single background restriction, basic skills remain indispensable. Those in process engineering or R&D must be familiar with instrument operation and possess fundamental knowledge of biological agents. Since materials are precious, any operational error can lead to waste. Furthermore, relevant positions require long periods in laboratories, wearing sterile equipment, and handling blood and biological samples; those who cannot adapt to this will find the roles difficult. While some candidates ask about remote work, the nature of the biotech industry requires on-site operations, which the company clarifies beforehand.

Lin also advised job seekers to have a basic understanding of the company before an interview rather than coming “empty-handed,” to demonstrate respect and commitment to the position. He pointed out that regenerative medicine has high growth potential; as long as one maintains passion and continues learning, there is ample room for development. In particular, talent with “immediate combat readiness” (the ability to contribute right away) and independent thinking skills will be much more noticeable than those who only follow instructions. He emphasized that on a career path, the uniqueness and value an individual can create are the most core and standout competitive strengths.
